In his only second appearance at a Pro Junior, the National Champion of Costa Rica, Carlos Muñoz, extended his winning streak to the waves of Newport Beach in California to win the Volcom VQS Championships after a tremendous comeback in the final minutes of the final which he left with $ 7,000, the greatest amount won by a Costa Rican in a competition.

From start to finish in the middle of surfers in the world top level, Muñoz of 16 years was the best of the race in the Under 18 division that took part and after three days to run the event throughout the five rounds was not achieved anything other than the lead in every series.
 
In his category scored the highest wave of the event with 20.09 - of 10 possible -after landing what was hailed as the best air of the last day of competition during the semifinals, after completing the "Superman Air Walk " that drew the applause of Volcom event commentators.
 
For its part, also got the second highest combination of the event with 15.97 in that semifinal, the first was the French Pierre Valentin with 16.67. In total, five combinations of the tico conducted (at its 5 rounds), three of them were among the top 10 competition.

Already at the end of the event, the Tico was for the transmission room the  "Show Man", series that he even wanted to repeat the air of the day, however, his first best wave would be a right that began with the "Air Reverse" which has dominated over a long history of strong maneuvers that lasted until the bank.

With this wave of 7.93, Muñoz left the fourth in a heat that the defending champion of the event, Hawaii's Tanner Hendrickson earned until the tico was released in the last three minutes and this time left with a backside very successful, vertical decorating loaded in the art, was awarded wave 5.77, the necesary to leave Junior winner, plus a substantial amount of money.
 
Their opposites, Hendrickson (10.93), Keanu Asing (10.93), both of Hawaii, and Brazilian Santiago Muñiz (10.10), all were at least once in the first position in the final 25 minutes. The preliminary heats were 15.

The event named Crustageous Oaks Summer Camp, offered waves of 1 to 1.5 meters along its trajectory that started since May 13th. Another of the merits of Costa Rica is the temperature of the water where he won and not used to running and was below 10 degrees Celsius.

En su apenas segunda participación en un Pro Junior, el Campeón Nacional de Costa Rica, Carlos Muñoz, extendió su buena racha hasta las olas de Newport Beach en California al ganar el Volcom VQS Championships tras una tremenda remontada en los últimos minutos de la final, de donde salió con 7.000 dólares, mayor suma conseguida por un costarricense en una competencia.  De principio a fin y en medio de surfistas del máximo nivel mundial, Muñoz de 16 años fue el mejor de la contienda en la Sub 18, división en la que participó y que después de tres días de correrse el evento, en las 5 rondas que estuvo, no logró otra cosa más que el liderato en todas sus series.
 
En su categoría puntuó la ola más alta del evento con 9.20 –de 10 posibles- después de aterrizar lo que fue catalogado como el mejor aéreo del último día de competencia durante las semifinales, tras completar el “Superman Air Walk” que sacó los aplausos a los comentaristas del evento Volcom.  
 
Por su parte, metió también la segunda combinación más alta del evento con 15.97 en aquella semifinal; la primera fue del francés Pierre Valentin con 16.67. En total, de las cinco combinaciones que el tico realizó (en sus 5 rondas) tres de ellas fueron de las 10 mejores de la competencia. 
 
Ya en la final del evento, el tico era para la sala de transmisión el hombre espectáculo o “Show Man”, serie en la que incluso quiso repetir el aéreo del día; sin embargo, su primera mejor ola sería una derecha que arrancó con el “Air Reverse” que tiene dominado, más una larga trayectoria de fuertes maniobras que prolongó hasta la orilla.
 
Con esa ola de 7.93, Muñoz salía de la cuarta posición de un heat que el campeón defensor del evento, Tanner Hendrickson de Hawai  ganaba hasta que el tico se soltó en los últimos 3 minutos  y esta vez hacia la izquierda con un backside muy acertado, que adornó de verticales cargados en la técnica,  ola que  fue premiada con 5.77, lo necesario para salir ganador en Junior, más una importante cantidad de dinero.
 
Sus contrarios, Hendrickson  (10.93), Keanu Asing (10.93), ambos de Hawai, y el brasileño Santiago Muñiz  (10.10), todos, estuvieron al menos una vez en la primera posición de una final de 25 minutos. Los heats previos fueron de 15.
 
El evento denominado Crustageous Oaks Summer Camp, ofreció olas de 1 a 1.5 metros a lo largo de su trayectoria que inició desde el pasado 13 de mayo. Otro de los méritos del costarricense es la temperatura del agua en donde ganó y a la que no está acostumbrado a correr y que estuvo por debajo de los 10 grados centígrados.  
 
Con esta victoria estira su racha a dos podios internacionales consecutivos después de estar en la final del Reef Classic 6 Estrellas de Panamá que se había dejado su similar, Jason Torres, en abril pasado. En aquella oportunidad, Muñoz metió a su cuenta personal 2.200 dólares tras mejor papel en una fecha del Circuito Latino. 
 
La siguiente competencia  del de playa Esterillos, de estar en el país, podría ser la sexta fecha del Circuito Nacional DayStar, en Nosara el próximo fin de semana, cita a la que iría comprometido al podio de querer defender el título nacional en la categoría Open, campeonato que se definirá en Junio próximo en Playa Hermosa de Jacó.
